CITY TOUR HIGUEY
Surely we will be spending wonderful vacations in the wonderful hotel complexes on the spectacular beaches of Punta Cana, Bavaro or Cap Cana, but obviously we will want to get to know the culture, folklore and essence of the Dominican people up close and get to know Salvaleón de Higuey (gûey or huiou which means sun in the Taíno language). Higuey is the largest livestock production city in the Dominican Republic and the closest to the impressive beach destination of Punta Cana, we cannot miss the opportunity to meet it.
During our city tour and shopping in Higuey, a half-day cultural excursion, we will visit the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia, a modern Catholic sanctuary located in the city of Salvaleón de Higüey, in the East of the Dominican Republic. It is one of the most popular sanctuaries in the Caribbean and the largest cathedral in the Dominican Republic. The Basilica was built to replace an old sanctuary which dates back to 1572, where La Virgen de La Altagracia appeared, protective and spiritual mother of the Dominican people. The Basilica began its construction in 1954 and took 17 years to complete. Its splendor and elegant architecture will take your breath away. We will explore the most relevant historical aspects of the recent history of La Altagracia, which covers the last 500 years.
